[Review] Owning Violet, by: Monica Murphy

The Fowler Sisters #1

by: Monica Murphy
Release date: December 2nd, 2014
Read date: April 25th, 2016
Format: Kindle Edition
Pages: 401

I’ve moved through life doing what’s expected of me. I’m the middle daughter, the dutiful daughter. The one who braved a vicious attack and survived. The one who devoted herself to her family’s business empire. The one who met an ambitious man and fell in love. We were going to run Fleur Cosmetics together, Zachary and I.

Until he got a promotion and left me in the dust. Maybe it’s for the best, between his disloyalty and his wandering eye. But another man was waiting for me. Wanting me. He too has an overwhelming thirst for success, just like Zachary—perhaps even more so. He’s also ruthless. And mysterious. I know nothing about Ryder McKay beyond that he makes me feel things I’ve never felt before.

One stolen moment, a kiss, a touch . . . and I’m hooked. Ryder’s like a powerful drug, and I’m an addict who doesn’t want to be cured. He tells me his intentions aren’t pure, and I believe him. For once, I don’t care. I’m willing to risk everything just to be with him. Including my heart. My soul.

My everything.

Owning Violet has been in my tbr since before it came out, don't let my goodreads info fool you. It never draw much my attention, but I have always want it to give it a try. I did and it was good enough. It wasn't awful, but wasn't perfection. I think that some things were missing, but overall I liked reading it.

Imagine this scenario. One company, legacy of one family and its future will be in the hands of the Fowler sisters, which are the rightful owners by blood. The oldest sister, a derailed train. The middle sister, fully committed, but struggling. The youngest sister, always committed, never appreciated. Let's keep talking about the scenario of the middle sister. The sister that threw herself at work to forget things from the past. The one who is in a relationship that will never give her what she wants. But then this sexy as hell guy that works for her irks her skin and makes her do everything she isn't supposed to do. But he has some not so pretty secrets of his own, so they agree to use each other. What happens when usage becomes ownership?

Violet Fowler is that middle child. I wonder why all the sister have flower names, but whatever. The man's name is Ryder, which reminds me more of a Motorcycle Club man than a head marketing man. These two were a couple made to burn the whole city down. He went in looking for job opportunities to unlink himself of the past. She went in looking for an adventure and to give control. Both of them really received what they were looking, but something more... love.

I liked the story, but I was left with so many blank holes. There were so many things that I, as readers, knew, but he never told her. There were things that were told without reason. There wasn't much action persé, which was a little bit of a let down. But I have to admit that the bigger problem just became bigger and it did not stop in this book, which means that it continues in the next. I really liked that. It made me want to keep reading the other books even though this one wasn't what I was looking for. I have to admit that there were scenes that definitely need some type of reward. Overall, as I said before, it was a good read, I liked... that's it.

Waiting on Wednesday [86]

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating. This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:
The Trials of Apollo #2

by: Rick Riordan
Release Date: May 2nd, 2017

Zeus has punished his son Apollo--god of the sun, music, archery, poetry, and more--by casting him down to earth in the form of a gawky, acne-covered sixteen-year-old mortal named Lester. The only way Apollo can reclaim his rightful place on Mount Olympus is by restoring several Oracles that have gone dark. What is affecting the Oracles, and how can Apollo/Lester do anything about them without his powers?

After experiencing a series of dangerous--and frankly, humiliating--trials at Camp Half-Blood, Lester must now leave the relative safety of the demigod training ground and embark on a hair-raising journey across North America. Somewhere in the American Midwest, he and his companions must find the most dangerous Oracle from ancient times: a haunted cave that may hold answers for Apollo in his quest to become a god again--if it doesn't kill him or drive him insane first. Standing in Apollo's way is the second member of the evil Triumvirate, a Roman emperor whose love of bloodshed and spectacle makes even Nero look tame. To survive the encounter, Apollo will need the help of son of Hephaestus Leo Valdez, the now-mortal sorceress Calypso, the bronze dragon Festus, and other unexpected allies--some familiar, some new--from the world of demigods. Come along for what promises to be a harrowing, hilarious, and haiku-filled ride. . . .

What are you waiting on?

[Review] Consolation Prize, by: Linda Kage

Forbidden Men #9

by: Linda Kage
Release Date: November 12th, 2016
Read Date: April 25th, 2017
Format: Kindle Edition
Pages: 407

Don’t you just hate it when someone destroys all your carefully made plans?

I mean, I had goals: college to graduate in one semester, a future I was working hard to reach, and an image of myself I wanted the world to see. My life was stacked into these precisely placed blocks. But then Colton Gamble came along and knocked them all askew.

I hated how he messed everything up, how he could hog all my attention whenever he was around, how he made my pulse quicken—but only because he ticked me off...not because I was attracted to him. Oh! And I hated how he knew how attractive he was too, the shallow, full of himself, doesn’t take no for an answer, too flirty, too cocky, extremely irritating jerk.

The boy had all the qualities that turned me off. Or so I thought.

One night he wasn’t quite the brainless, overconfident jerk I assumed he always was.
One night, he took care of me when I was at my lowest. He opened up to me and made me open up to him.

Now I’m learning maybe he’s not what I first thought he was. And maybe I’M not what I first thought I was. Maybe it’s okay to rearrange a couple of my perfectly set blocks. Maybe, just maybe, I’ll stop worrying about what I’m afraid everyone else will think and finally reach for something I really want. It’s possible some of my plans need to be destroyed, and Colton Gamble is exactly the kind of mess I need in my life.

What do you think? Should I give him a try?

Desperately seeking your advice,
Julianna Radcliffe

I have to say this... Forbidden Men might be one of my few favorite series that I will never get tired if more books keep coming out, I swear. These stories keep coming more real, more raw and so lovely and romantic that I really want to be one of these girls. These series have something of each pool of person, except latino, but I am ok with it. I'm afraid that there's no more and that makes me sad, but I am happy that I read them.

This story is about that little boy from the beginning called Colton. We meet him way back as a little boy of eight years, but now ten years has passed and he has become a hot as hell man... a Forbidden Man. And then, we have Julianna. We meet her back in Brandt's book, but brief. Now we meet her really good and let me tell you, she's fierce. The combination of these two was totally better than expected.

I loved all of it, from beginning to end. It was the perfect combination of sassiness, romance, action and sweetness and I love every second of it. I have said it before and I will say it now, this series is the shit. Everyone should read it. The best is that is that the series is not that short, but goes fast and everything is so well explained it that everyone will understand it and love it. I totally recommend it.

The past she can’t remember. The secret he hides. And a love that’s worth risking it all.

After a devastating car crash stole both her family and her memory, Grace Stanton was left with no past and an uncertain future. Now Grace likes to keep things simple. The green-eyed, sexy-as-hell musician has “trouble” tattooed all over him, and Grace isn’t taking any chances with her heart.

Brody knows he doesn’t deserve an amazing woman like Grace—her creamy skin, red hair, or that smart mouth that fuels his every fantasy—but there’s something between them that’s more than chemistry. Something real. He’ll just have to convince Grace that he’s worth the risk—and hide the secret that haunts his worst dreams. But when fate plays a cruel hand, Brody’s darkest sin suddenly threatens his last chance at redemption…and the life of the woman he loves.

Like fingers interlacing, several things slowly come together and fit into place.
“You could fall in love with me and not remember it?” I whisper.
She swallows and nods.
Dumbfounded, I stare at her. “Holy fuck.”
Looking miserable, she nods again. She tries to pull away but I don’t let her. I put my arms around her and squeeze.
She resists for what feels like forever, stiff and uncomfortable in my arms, but then slowly she gives in. She melts against me with a sigh, tucks her face into the space between my neck and shoulder, and winds her arms around my waist.
We stand like that for a while, not talking, feeling the chaotic beating of each other’s hearts. Her hair smells like sunshine. She’s soft and warm against me, lush and feminine. My dick is still wrestling for control with my brain, which is in a state of shock and is just sitting there lifelessly inside my skull like a big lump of cheese.
And suddenly I realize what a gift I’m being offered.
I can never right the wrongs of the past, no matter how desperately I might want to. But maybe those wrongs aren’t the end of the story. Maybe they’re only a new beginning.
If I’m going to do good by her, this is a fucking fantastic place to start.
My voice gruff, I say, “I’m in.”
She pulls away and looks at me, a little furrow between her brows. “What?”
“I said I’m in. Fuck it. If I can make you fall in love with me once, I can make you fall in love with me again and again. Every day if I have to.”
Grace blanches. “The Egosaurus rides again. I’m not in love with you!”
“But you will be,” I vow, looking at her dead-on. “Because I’m not gonna leave you any other choice.”
I plunge my hands into her hair, grip her head, pull her toward me, and fit my mouth against hers.
It’s like the Fourth of July and New Year’s Eve and Christmas morning, all rolled into one.
Heat. Color. Noise. Fireworks behind my eyes. She moans into my mouth, digs her nails into my back, arches against me. I moan, too, fucking her luscious mouth with my tongue, one hand behind her neck and the other roaming all over her body, learning her shape, the dip of her waist, the full, tight curve of her ass.
It’s greedy.
It’s scorching.
It’s everything.
If there were a Guinness World Record for the most amazing, mind-blowing, cock-stiffening, heart-pounding, panty-melting, burn-down-the-house kiss, we’d win that motherfucker hands down.
We’re both breathing hard, desperate, mindless, lost. The kiss goes on and on, until I’m drunk on her. I’m flying. I’m melting. I’m—
Someone loudly clears his throat.
Stunned and reeling, Grace and I break apart.
Nico stands in the kitchen doorway with his hands on his hips, grinning like an idiot. “Hiya, kids,” he drawls. “What’re you two squirrels up to?”
Flushed and trembling, Grace lifts a hand to her lips. She lets out a short, astonished laugh and cuts her gaze to me.
I can’t talk either. My mouth can’t form any coherent words. I just stand there, dumb as a rock, my mind blank, my shorts tented, staring at Grace like I’ve spent my entire life up to this point living in a dark cave, surviving on worms and insects, and she just walked in with candles and flowers and a big fucking steak on a hot plate.
“Uhh . . .”
Nico bursts out laughing.
“I’ll just go see what Kat’s up to.” Grace’s voice is high and shaky. She bolts from the room.
“Just wanted to let you know a few people are starting to show up.” Nico glances at the front of my shorts and chuckles. “So, uh, you might want to pull yourself together, brother.”
Shaken to my core, I sag against the counter, gripping it hard for support, and let out a ragged breath. “Jesus. Is that what it’s like for you with Kat? That feeling like you’re . . .”
“Free-falling?” Nico supplies when I can’t find the right word. “High flying? Completely out of control?”
When I look up at him, he nods. “Yeah, brother. It is. At the beginning. And then it gets so much deeper and so much better, there aren’t any words for it at all.” His eyes—bright, cobalt-blue eyes that made him famous—pierce me. “But be careful. Because once you get on that speeding train, you can’t get off. Even if it jumps the tracks, crashes into a nuclear power plant, and burns the whole world to the ground.”
He gives me one long, last look and then turns around and leaves.
From somewhere very far off, I hear the sound of my demon laughing.

He definitely wasn't supposed to get that email...

Subject: My Boss.

Have I already told you that I hate my boss today?

Sexy as hell or not, this pompous, arrogant, ASSHOLE asked me to pick up his dry cleaning the second I walked through the door. Then he told me that I needed to take his Jaguar to a car wash that was ten miles outside of the city, but only after I needed to stand in a never-ending line to buy some type of limited, hundred-dollar watch.

I honestly can't wait to see the look on his face two months from now when I tell him that I'm quitting his company and that he can kiss my ass. KISS. MY. ASS.

All those former fantasies about him kissing me with his "mouth of perfection" or bending me over my desk and filling me with his cock are long over. OVER.

Your bestie,

PS--Please tell me your day is going better than mine...

Subject: Re: My Boss.

No, you haven't already told me that you hate your boss today, but seeing as though you've sent me this email directly, I know now...

Yes, I did ask you to pick up my dry cleaning the second you arrived to work to day. (Where is it?) And I did tell you to take my Jaguar to the car wash and pick up my thousand-dollar watch. (Thank you for taking five hours to do something that could be accomplished in two.)

You don't have to wait two months from now to see the look on my face when you tell me you're quitting. I'm standing outside your office at this very moment. ( Open the door. )

No comment on your "fantasies," although I highly doubt they're "long over."

Your boss,

PS--Yes. My day is definitely going far better than yours...

"Lean back on the table and spread your legs for me ..."

Being a doctor in New York City has never been easy. Especially for someone like me, who has a private practice and an incompetent staff who insists on leaving me to fill in for them.

Over the past six months, I've performed one too many pap smears, three too many "breast exams," and scrubbed in on several reconstructive surgeries. (This would be acceptable, if I was still interested in general medicine, but I'm not. I'm supposed to be a goddamn therapist ...)

When my team finally came to their senses and decided to bring someone more competent into the practice last month, I was actually elated.

Until I realized that our new "doctor" was none other than the woman I was supposed to meet for dinner two weeks ago. The same woman who stood me up with nothing more than an "I can't meet you anymore, sorry," after we agreed to move our online talks into reality.

I haven't forgotten any of the filthy fantasies she told me about, and I never deleted our dirty messages. And if she thinks that I'm going to act like a "professional" and pretend like that shit never happened, she has another thing coming ...

I love easy reads. They are quick and always, always have a HEA. Whitney G is an amazing author, so I knew that when I picked up these books I was going to have a good time and I did.

The first story was something that I would wish it happens to me, I swear. I would love to work in a Publishing place. I mean, really, who wouldn't? Reading all those books before anyone else and all that. Plus, the sexy AF boss that has a secretly crush on me? HA. Where do I sign?

The second story is not for me. I don't like medicine or science, but I have to admit that the whole story was super hot. Because really, who wouldn't want to match with a super hot doctor in a dating app? The downside is that it results to be your boss, but, oh well.

You see, both stories are totally worth to read. They made me happy and I'm sure it will make anyone happy too, so I totally recommend.

[Short Review] The Protector, by: Jodi Ellen Malpas

by: Jodi Ellen Malpas
Release Date: September 6th, 2016
Read Date: April 22nd, 2017
Format: Kindle Edition
Pages: 384

People think they have Camille Logan nailed: daddy's girl; beautiful, spoiled young woman with her father's bank balance to fund her lifestyle. But Camille is determined to have a life free from his strings. Out on her own, she's made mistakes, including one that found her clawing her way back after a stint in rehab and plenty of bad press. Now, after fighting so hard to be independent and happy, she finds her life threatened as a result of her father's ruthless business dealings. Caught between resentment and fear, Camille prepares herself for the measures her father will take to protect her. But nothing could prepare her for the ex-SAS sniper who crashes into her life.

Jake Sharp resides in his own personal hell. He was distracted from duty once before, and the consequences were devastating--both personally and professionally. He vowed never to let that happen again. Accepting the job of bodyguard to Camille Logan isn't the kind of distraction from his demons he should take. Women and Jake don't mix well, yet protecting the heiress seems the lesser of two evils. But Jake soon discovers that she isn't the woman she's perceived to be. She's warm, compassionate, her presence settling, and his duty to protect her soon goes deeper than a well-paid job, no matter how hard he fights it. He needs absolution. He comes to need Camille. But he knows he can't have both.

I have always loved Jodi Ellen stories, from the moment This Man fell in my lap, her writing captivated me and making me fan of anything she writes. This book was not an exception, but I have to admit it wasn't her greatest hit for me. I loved the idea and all, but something was missing. She writes these perfect epilogues and I missed that in this book. I cry because of it.

The Protector's story is about that, a protector. Jake Sharp is an ex-soldier who, now, protects people for living, meaning he is a bodyguard. His latest assignment will turn his life forever. Camille Logan is famous in the country. Model, clothes designer, you name it.... but also she is the daughter of the biggest shark in the country too, making her a target for all the threats her father receives. The last threat made it a little more personal, so Camille needs a bodyguard. Jake. These two will get more entangled than my hair when has not been washed.

The story has it ups and downs for the first 300 pages, after that everything was up and up until everything fell apart in the last page. I wanted it end better, but I'm all good with how ended so... I'm good. It was a good read, you read it.
