[Release Blitz + Excerpt] Timid, by: Devney Perry

Lark Cove #2

TIMID

by: Devney Perry
Publication Date: September 4th, 2018
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Willa Doon has always been shy. Her quiet demeanor was something she’s always embraced. That is, until Jackson Page moves to town. The one man she desperately wants to take notice struggles to remember her name.

Year after year, Willa stands by, watching as the bartender slash playboy drowns his demons in beer and sex. Then one night, he shows up at her door, suddenly aware that the girl he’s seen around Lark Cove is now a beautiful woman.

Except what he doesn’t remember is that this visit isn’t his first. They spent a night together once before. A night he’s forgotten, thanks to a bottle of tequila.

A night that crushed a timid girl’s heart, and set a broken man on the path to heal them both.

EXCERPT

“Oh.” She tucked a lock of hair behind her ear. “What, um . . .” Her fingers fiddled with the clip on the board. “What’s up?”
“You read my note?”
She nodded. “I did.”
“Good.” That meant we could move on from the whole me-calling-her-by-the-wrong-name thing and get to the days where she wasn’t slamming doors in my face. “Come to the bar and have dinner with me tonight.”
“Was that an invitation or a command?”
I shrugged. “Does it matter?”
She frowned and I knew immediately that wasn’t the right thing to say. Without a word, she marched toward the building between the bunkhouses marked SHOWERS
“Hey, wait!” I ran after her, but she was walking fast. “What about dinner?”
She didn’t answer. She just kept on marching all the way to the women’s side, disappearing inside without hesitation.
Well, fuck.
I guess my note hadn’t worked after all.
I debated going inside the showers but didn’t want to terrify a young girl if Willa wasn’t alone. So with a grumble and a kick at the dirt, I went back toward the parking lot.
I didn’t miss Hazel watching from a window in the lodge, laughing her ass off. At least I was entertaining her.
She’d be in for another show soon, because I’d be back again tomorrow.

Love isn’t always NEAT…

Bartender and all-around bad boy, Eric Collins, has come to a crossroads. It’s time to take life seriously and maybe even attempt to settle down. If only the person he was hoping to settle down with didn’t turn out to be pregnant.

Starting over in a small town, Jean is determined to turn her wild lifestyle around and be the kind of mother she always wished she’d had. Since local bar owner and all-around hottie, Eric, is now determined to steer clear of her pregnant self, it should be easy. When she goes into labor during a snowstorm and her car slides on some ice, however, it’s Eric who comes to the rescue.

There seems to be a bond between them now, but is it enough? And can Eric give up his manwhore ways to be the man Jean needs?

She has done it again. Kylie Scott has come through for her characters. And this time was all around bad boy, fuckboy, and bartender, Eric Collins. Let me say that I wasn't too thrill of reading about him because watching him from other people's perspective, I didn't really like it, but now he grew on me. Eric deserved this and I'm more than happy that I read it.

If you have read the other books in this series, then you know Eric Collins and how of a pain in the ass he was before. But now he wants to do good and better. That is when SHE comes in, Jean. Pregnant and all, she becomes the reason he goes celibate. When the little baby girl is born, he freaks. But then he gets his head outta his ass and for then on is hands on. But you know, nothing is always that easy.

Eric reminds me of Mal, another character of Kylie Scott, but also I have him mixed with a character of Jay Crownover, Asa. Eric has this charm that makes anyone do whatever he is telling you to do. He makes anyone laugh at loud, but he is the person that deep inside he was to be truly happy. So when Jean comes around, he knows he is no good for her, but still, he wants. I think that the truly beautiful thing of Eric. He gives, gives and gives, but he also wants and Jean does not forget about it. She received so much from him that at the end, she just gives him everything he needs.

I have to admit that every scene in where Eric is with Ada, the little baby, I melted. It was so cute to see him talk to her as if she understands him. It was totally sweet to see that Eric was almost the only one that could calm the baby. And the whole chapter of Jean giving birth with Eric there was plain beautiful and hilarious.

Kylie Scott is an author that I really recommend, so the recommendation of this book goes without saying. Read it.

PS, I don't know why but while I was reading this book, I paired the song "Nothing Left for You" by Sam Smith with it. I just wanted to say that. Bye.

excerpt

I’d been tricked. Betrayed.
After Andre and Jean ate their lunch, we headed outside to deal with her stuff. The cold wind suited my mood to perfection.
Talk about disappointed.
“Don’t lift that, it looks heavy,” I snapped.
Jean blinked. “It’s a pillow.”
“The world’s largest pillow ever. You can’t be too careful.” My gaze roamed over her swollen middle. “You’re . . .”
“Pregnant?” she asked with a voice dripping poison and sugar.
“Are you having trouble with the concept?”
“Absolutely not. I was just going to say huge, that’s all.”
She blew out an exasperated breath. “Thanks, Eric. That makes me feel so much better.”
“I just . . .”
“Don’t bother.” The woman turned back to her sensible, medium-sized SUV and got busy riffling through the contents. I was surprised she’d been able to squeeze into the driver’s seat.
Boxes and stuff took up almost every inch inside the vehicle. Each and every box seemed to have been neatly labeled with the contents.
The woman took her organization seriously. She looked over her shoulder. “You know, I can’t help noticing that Eric-the-smooth-moving-flirt has been suddenly replaced by Eric-the-awkward-jerk.”
“Well, you said you were single.” I folded my arms defensively across my chest.
“I am.”
And then there was an awkward silence.
“Yeah, but . . . I mean, in your condition . . .” I fumbled to a halt.
She turned, face all scrunched up. Like I was the one with the problem.
“Just hop out of the way so I can grab some boxes,” I said, voice gruff.
Still nothing from her. “It’s a second-story walk-up and you have a lot of stuff to get up there. You should be taking it easy.” Hands on hips, I tapped my black leather boot against the sidewalk, waiting her out. “Jean, I’m not trying to insult you. It’s the truth.”
She swore quietly, going back to fussing with the contents in the vehicle. I don’t think any woman has ever given me the silent treatment quite this quickly. Usually I’m good for at least a couple of hours after seeing them naked.
Man, I still couldn’t believe this was happening. God hated me or something. Pregnant women and me were enema. Anathema. Whatever. Now that I’d seen her out in the autumn light, however, she looked younger than I’d first guessed. Despite her tired eyes, her skin was smooth, soft looking. She was likely closer to her early twenties than mid.
“How old are you?” I asked.
“Why do you care?”
I shrugged one shoulder. “Just curious.”
“How old are you?”
“Nearly thirty.”
She sniffed. “I’m twenty-two.”
Young, like I’d thought. She was probably too immature for me, anyway.
“Come on, Jean. Let me get some of the boxes.”
Boyd ambled out of the Dive Bar, turning his head this way and that, looking up and down the street. I raised my hand and he started over in our direction. The big cook would make short work out of moving all this stuff. Behind us, Andre and Nell came out of the tenants’ entrance to the Bird Building. The place was a big brick building about a hundred years old. Just past the door was an entryway with stairs leading up to the second floor, followed by two empty shops, their windows covered in flyers about local events. Concerts and parades and shit. They’d been vacant for a while, unfortunately. Andre’s Guitar Den came next, then Pat’s tattoo parlor Inkaho, and the Dive Bar on the corner.
“Everything’s good to go. Alex and I gave it a cleaning last week just to be sure,” said Nell, smacking a kiss on Jean’s cheek.
“You’ll meet Alex later. She’s probably busy working or something now. She’s sort of a shut-in.”
“You two didn’t have to do that,” said Jean. “Thank you.”
“Anytime.”
Andre leaned against the SUV. “Your furniture got delivered yesterday too, so it’s all good to go.”
“Excellent,” said Jean. “I can’t wait to sleep in a decent bed again. Road trips when you’re seven months’ pregnant kind of suck.”
“I bet.”
“Who’s minding the kitchen?” I asked.
“Lydia will text Boyd if they need something,” said Nell.
“We’re only going to be a few feet away from the place.”
I frowned.
“I own the kitchen, Eric. Not you,” she said. “You’re in charge of the bar, that’s all.”
One of Jean’s eyebrows inched up slightly. So I might have implied that I was the sole owner. Shit happened.
I crossed my arms. “Fine. No need to bite my head off.”
“My best online friend just moved to town. We’ve been texting and skyping for months. She’s been an absolute rock for me through all the nerves of being pregnant again,” said Nell. “Stop messing with my happy.”
And then there was an awkward silence. Great. If only there was some way to get out of helping without looking like a raging asshole. The possibility of anything happening between me and Jean had been buried six feet deep, never to be spoken of again.

This story is one of those that by finishing the Prologue will make you cry. Is a story with a sad beginning and a wonderful ending. Is a story of someone strong enough to look forward and not staying in the same spot. Is a story that breaks your heart so it can mend it together back again.

I found this author by accident. I read one book and fell in love, read a whole series and I was hooked forever. When I knew there was another book of hers in the way, I had to read it. When I knew I could read it before coming out, I was all in. Imagine my surprise when I got the book in my Kindle App. I went right in. I devoured the book in one day. I read it while crying, laughing at loud and finished it with a huge smile on my face.

Poppy's life was good. She was married to a wonderful man who made Birthday Lists. Lists of things to do before each birthday, like a bucket list. Everything was cut short because he died and made her a widow. You see? My heart broke for her, but fate was not done with Poppy. Because five years later, fate brought her Cole. Poppy is going to make a check in everything on that list, and Cole is going to help her do that and more. Love might be the best cure for her and he is going to give it to her in a heartbeat.

Look, this story made me devoured every chapter like it was the last water on the desert. I couldn't stop on one chapter to do anything else, I had to finish it and be happy. This book also made me to create a bucket list for myself, just because I want to do everything she did. Seriously, who wouldn't want to do a Paint Fight, I want that, who is with me? This book, as any other second-chance romance book, taught me that love can be found in the least expected place and always in the correct moment.

I fully recommend this book to anyone seeking to read something very romantic and full of deep feelings. Be aware that you will need tissues because the tears will be inevitable.

Turning to the door, I smiled, ready to greet my late-evening customer, but faltered as the door closed behind him.
Cole Goodman was walking my way.
My belly dipped as I took him in. His aviator sunglasses were perched on top of his chocolate-brown hair. A black polo stretched across his broad shoulders and pulled tight across his muscled arms. His pale-blue jeans molded to his Herculean thighs before draping down to his black, square-toed boots. The leather belt on Cole’s trim waist held both a shining badge and a holstered gun.
Cole smiled and locked his light-green eyes on mine as he crossed the room.
His straight, white teeth made my breath hitch—something that had happened last night more times than I wanted to admit.
Molly, who had turned around from her seat to greet our customer, spun around so her back was to Cole. Her cheeks flushed as she whispered, “Wow.”
     Wow was right.
     Cole Goodman was—simply put—gorgeous.
He could give a woman a speeding ticket and get a thank-you in return. He inspired women to attempt push-ups in a karate class just for the chance to watch him sweat through his gi. Cole made grown women blush like teenagers and giggle in corners, like those girls at the dojo last night.

Getaway #3

ESCAPE

by: Jay Crownover
Publication Date: January 30th, 2018
Read Date: January 20th, 2018
Genre: Contemporary Romance, Adult
Format: Kindle ARC
Pages: 391

Everything inside of him is screaming that he needs to run, he needs to go, he needs to escape.

Lane Warner is used to being overshadowed and overlooked.

After all, he’s the youngest brother and the most laid back one in the family. He’s the one known for going with the flow and not making waves, even when things seem to be at their worst.

Very few things in life have had the ability to rile Lane up and get under his skin. At the top of that list is his childhood friend Brynn Fox…no…Brynn Warner. The fact that they share a last name was the one thing that has the power to light him up and spin him out of control like no other. There was no calm, cool and collected when it comes to all the reasons why Brynn had to become part of his family.

It’s slowly killing him to keep wanting what he can’t have, so Lane sees only one way to stop himself from doing something they’ll both regret…he has to leave.

Everything inside of her is calling out to find him, to follow, to bring him home.

Brynn Warner is used to being stuck between a rock and a hard place.

After all, she’s the daughter of an unrepentant gold-digger who never once blinked at being the cause of her daughter’s pain and suffering.

Very few things in her life have ever brought happiness and a sense of security. At the very top of that list is Lane Warner. She has unwaveringly loved the youngest Warner since the first minute she laid eyes on him. He was everything Brynn ever wanted and everything she knew she could never have.

Sometimes the right choice is the one that hurts the most and Brynn’s had to make a few that felt like they might be the end of her.

When Lane takes off, one thing is clear, the only choice Brynn has is to go after him.

She’s going to bring her wayward cowboy home….whatever it takes.

Escape is a standalone novel, the third book in the Getaway series, which features the hardheaded and brokenhearted Warner brothers and the women who dare to love them. These boys are very good at putting the wild in wilderness.

It would be totally overrated if I said that I have been waiting for this book since I read book two. Lane's story was one that I was really intrigued to read since book one. Brynn was a character that you would see whatever was going to happen in the end with Lane, but I wanted to know the how it was going to happen. So the journey was exciting!

Lane Warner is the little brother. The one that no one looks because the first two brothers are the one that steals the gazes, but Brynn has to show him that he is so wrong. Brynn Fox is the girl that the Warner family adopted as their own after so many problems in her life, they saved her. But her happy ending has yet to come... with Lane. They have been best friends since they were five, but life (because it screws everyone) set them apart and when they finally can be together, they don't take advantage. Lane's escape with a broken heart, but Brynn goes after him to put him and herself together.

They make this seriously long trip from California to Wyoming, but on the way things get complicated. Like in every book of this series, something big is going to happen. This time it was a kid. Cameron has nowhere to go and when he finds himself taking the help that Lane and Brynn offer, what can they all do is roll with it.

As I said, I enjoyed every little bit of this book. But I have to admit that I found it too quick. Like in just a blink of my eyes, I was already 35% into the book and then I was halfway through. The whole romance blend into the book more than actually becoming the important thing. The whole action with the kid, evading the bad guys and then the police took more the first plane than the whole rest.

Also, I have to point out that this author linked in series with other two more series of her, if that is not genius then I don't know what it is. I felt like a kid in Christmas when I figured out who the lady cop was and who was Cameron sold to. I was like, wait a minute, I know these people!. It was a good easter egg, so thank you.

Here is where I point out that what this author made at the end of the whole book was really, really cruel. The epilogue for Lane and Brynn was perfect, but it also leaves us with a ... at the end. Holy cow! I cursed so bad that I swear that I thought my mom was going to wash my mouth. That was not fun, Mrs. Crownover!

Overall, the experience was a joyful one. I appreciate the whole book, so I recommend it to anyone. I love cowboys (I seriously need to find one for myself) and Lane is a cowboy through and through.

excerpt

Brynn

For the first time in days, it felt like my world was set back to rights.

Everything was crooked and off center the minute Lane walked out of the house in Wyoming and disappeared. I couldn’t think straight. Every step I took was wobbly and unsteady. From the moment I opened my eyes, to the second I fell into a fitful sleep at night, it was like I saw things through a grainy black and white filter. There was no color in any of my days when Lane was gone. There was no joy or light. There was only a massive void where I knew I should be able to feel my heart hurting and my soul suffering, the way they always did when it came to the youngest Warner, but when he left there was nothing.

I thought I knew what it felt like to have everything inside of me freeze and shatter. When word came that Lane had been shot while trying to protect his niece from a madman hell-bent on destroying everything that was important to Sutton, I was sure I would never be able to breathe or feel again. That icy pain, that frigid fear had nothing on the numbness that followed when Lane walked out the door seconds after Jack dropped to his knee. At that moment, I knew I was supposed to focus on the man asking me to share his life with him, the one who wanted me for me, and not because he was driven by some chivalrous need to save me from my messed up family and tumultuous home life.

But I hadn’t been focused on Jack. All I could see was the resignation and regret flashing through Lane’s pale blue eyes. We were both reliving the moment another man had asked me to marry him. Only that time, Lane hadn’t been able to escape the outcome. He’d been reminded of it for years, every waking moment when I’d technically held the title of his stepmom. I was something neither one of us could get away from no matter how hard we tried. It was amazing how much one little yes could change everything.

Now that he was standing in front of me, looking much thinner and more haggard than he had even when he came home from the hospital, I finally felt like I could inhale again. Everything that was fuzzy and blurred around the edges pulled back into sharp focus. I could look at the sky behind his tousled head and see that it was the same stormy blue as his eyes. I could also focus on the lines of tension and stress radiating out of the corners of those eyes and the bruised, dark hollows underneath them. Without him, nothing felt like it mattered. There was no home. There was no peace of mind. There was no safety and security.

When he was close, the littlest things felt hugely important and essential. The twitch of his lips into a wry grin spread warmth that chased away the emptiness for the first time in what felt like forever. The heat radiating off of his long, lean body made my heart kick back to life. When his arms wrapped around me for a seriously overdue hug, I finally felt alive. Finally felt something other than the echoing loneliness and hollowness that consumed me the minute he turned his back on me. Even with Daye trapped between us, I still felt a tingle at every single spot where his body touched mine.

“It’s so good to see you.” I meant it with every fiber of my being. Looking at him, even as worn and as drawn as he appeared, settled something deep inside of me.

REVIEW

Kylie Scott is an excellent author that little by little has been getting into my have-to-read list. I have read two series of her that were absolutely perfect, so when it caught my attention that she was releasing a YA book, I had to have it. When I received it, I couldn't believe it (IRL I never believe it when I receive any ARC). I read it as soon as I could.

You know, it is said that when something terrible happens, the victims connect in better ways with other victims than any other person. This might as well be the case. Edie and John survived a terrible thing, and after that their lives change forever, but is it for good or bad? Edie has always been the good girl, but now after the incident, everything has become nothing like she wants, so she wants that change, a little more of adventure, being on the edge. John is the upside down. He has always been the fuck-up kid, but now he wants to do well, be a better person overall. The path of these two meet once again and they need other to keep themselves above.

The story at the beginning is heartbreaking and for Edie's part (which is the narrator) is kind of shitty everything that comes after, not that for John was peachy. When these two meet up again... let's say that John wasn't much thrilled and he thought she was better off without him, but fate has a way to put her in his way again. He understands that she needs more help from him than from anyone.

I loved John. The author makes the male characters just how I like them. They aren't chatty, which is kind of annoying, but their actions have more than a thousand words. And when they talk they actually mean it. Edie was kind of annoying sometimes, but overall it was a funny character.

The story wrapped up good, just how I liked them. It was very happy and I couldn't be more over the moon. If you haven't read any books of this author, this one might as well be the perfect first step.

“You were going to give it up to Duncan Dickerson?” he sneered. “Are you serious?”

I halted, staring at him. This was not good. “How do you know about that?”

“Anders overheard you and Hang talking.”

“Bastard.”

“Well?” he demanded, acting all authoritarian. Idiot.

“To be fair, I didn’t know his last name was Dickerson,” I said. “That’s unfortunate. Though, I wasn’t actually planning on marrying him, so . . .”

“Not funny.”

I shrugged.

“You barely know the guy.”

“Um, yeah. None of your concern. We’re not talking about this.” How mortifying! My face burned bright. People should just gather around and cook s’mores. “I appreciate that we’re friends. You mean a lot to me. But this is going to have to fall under definitely none of your damn business, so go away please.”

“We’re talking about it.” He advanced a step.

“No, we are not.” And I retreated.

“You were going to let a complete stranger touch you.” Advance.

Retreat. “People do it all the time. You do it all the time.”

“But you don’t,” he said, taking the final step, backing me up against the side of his car and getting all in my face. “Edie, this is your first time we’re talking about. Isn’t it?”

“Yes, and it’s going to be messy and painful and probably horribly embarrassing and I just want it over and done with.” I tried to meet his eyes but failed, settling for a spot on his right shoulder. “You’re not a girl; you wouldn’t understand. Also, last time I checked, you’re not the gatekeeper of my hymen, John Cole. So back the fuck off.”

He said nothing.

Deep, calming breaths. “Look, someday I’ll meet someone I really like and we’ll have a deep and meaningful relationship and go at it like bunnies. But I don’t want to be the dumb virgin in that scenario.”

He slowly shook his head.

“Also, I do not want to die a virgin.”

“What? What the hell are you talking about?”

“Hey, you and I both know death can occur at any time.”

“This is crazy.”

“I’m seeing a therapist!” I told his shoulder. “I don’t know if you noticed, but I’m a little bit messed up these days. It’s hard for me to trust people. That’s not going to change anytime soon.”

He screwed up his face at me. “Wha—”

“I’m just trying to be practical.”

“Well, you’re being ridiculous. None of this makes sense.”

“It does to me.”

Again, he said nothing.

In fact, he said nothing for so long that I finally looked him in the eye. The anger had left him, replaced by an emotion I didn’t recognize. Worst of all, he still smelled like summer. A little sweat and the open night air, everything I loved. Liked. I meant liked.

“What?” I said, finally.

He let loose a breath. “I’ll do it.”
